Not to mention his possible flirtation with her sister Angelica. That doesn’t work for a lot of reasons, first and foremost the fact that anyone who picks up this book is going to have seen the musical and therefore knows that Hamilton eventually cheats on Eliza. It takes out all the interesting, nuanced bits and turns Hamilton and Eliza’s relationship into a typical teen romance. It isn’t as engaging or historically accurate. There are no surprises here.Īlex and Eliza lacks of Hamilton’s brilliance. The romantic hero does all the heroic dashing about and brooding about how he’s not good enough for his true love that all romantic heroes have to do. The romantic heroine does all the things you would expect a romantic heroine to do. It is a very straightforward little romance. If you want to read it because you like YA romance and the cover is cute, eh. If you are considering reading it because you’re a history buff or historical fiction fan, don’t. If you are considering picking this book up because you loved Hamilton, don’t. In retrospect, that was kind of a dumb thing to expect, even if de la Cruz has admitted that she was inspired to write her novel by the musical. I read Alex and Eliza by Melissa de la Cruz because I was hoping that it would have the same feel as Hamilton. My sister is bothered by the fact that Eliza’s name is straddling the heart.
